Research at the CBS

Ghent University and the Department of Languages and Cultures have a long standing tradition in Buddhological research. The ongoing projects concentrate on various domains in Buddhist studies, but have a strong focus on the following main research fields:

In addition to the permanent staff, research is conducted on all levels, by Master and PhD students, in addition to Postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars. The research profile of the Department is very international, currently including researchers from China (including "joint PhD projects with Nanjing and Renmin Universities), Taiwan, Germany, Russia, and Thailand.

The Research Foundation Flanders offers four-year fellowships for outstanding PhD-projects. We therefore encourage young European scholars, who would like to do their Buddhological research with us, to contact us. We work together with institutions abroad, for example the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies (http://www.chibs.edu.tw), Zentrum für Buddhismuskunde, Hamburg (https://www.buddhismuskunde.uni-hamburg.de/de.html), and Dynamics in the History of Religions between Asia and Europe, KHK, Ruhr University Bochum (http://www.khk.ceres.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/en). In addition, bilateral agreements and Socrates programs have been established with many institutions abroad.
